Herbie Hancock's 'Cantaloupe Island' is one of the pillars of jazz repertoire. It's a song everyone needs to know - and it's a GREAT song for beginner improvisors. It only uses 3 chords, and each of those chords rings for a long time - so you have time to really explore the sounds in your improvisation.
