Jazz Standards Course - All Of Me

  • Course
  • 20 Lessons

"All Of Me" is one of the best songs to get started with jazz improvisation. In this course, you will be playing and improvising right from the start. In each lesson, I introduce a simple musical element, and then demonstrate how to improvise with that element. As the lessons progress, the musical elements build upon each other..AND of course there's 'call and response'. This course is great for beginners. :)

What's Included?

Enrolling in this course gives you access to:

  • 17 video lessons with over one hour of lesson content

  • You can download and save the 25 page PDF booklet, which contains transcriptions of everything I play in these course.

  • An original MP3 backing track that I played live

  • "Call and Response" lessons as MP3 format, so you can train your ears on the go.

Is this course right for me?

If you are a beginning jazz improvisor - this is perfect for you! I've taught many of these lessons hundreds of times to classical percussionists, or people who are learning vibraphone for the first time.

Maybe you know a few chords, but aren't sure how to apply them? Maybe you are a drum set player who wants to get into melodic percussion? This course will help you.

I probably went overboard :)

Often when I'm making these courses, I want to be thorough and give you all the tools you need to understand how the tune works. And the result is that I probably went WAY overboard and it's too much. But I want you to get as much value as possible from my courses, so I've included it all!

Check out the free preview lesson...

I made one of the lessons below open, so you can see what kind of videos are in the course.

There's even a BONUS lesson at the end of the course for the more adventurous beginners out there ;)

That's it! If you think this course is right for you, please check it out!

Thanks,

Tim

Filling in the harmony!

In this section, we will use the previous arpeggios as a basis for filling in the harmony. It's not always as simple as "Chord X uses Scale X" - and you'll see why with these lessons.

Let's walk up to the 5th.
Solo Improv Demonstration: Using only 1-2-3-4-5
Walking DOWN to the 5th!
Filling out the whole octave!

Leveling up! Technical practice, combination exercises.

Now that you have a strong basis with the chord tones and scalar methods of outlining the harmony, it's time to break free with some technical challenges.

Inversion Practice, Connecting Chords - Lesson & Solo Improv Demonstration
Combining the 12345 and 8765 (Exercise & Solo Demo)
Mixed Solo Improv Demonstration: Scales, Arpeggios, everything so far!

Call & Response Lessons

"Call & Response" is one of the best ways to practice this music. In these lessons, I will play a phrase and you will play a phrase. There are several ways to "respond" to my "call".

  1. You can try to repeat my phrase exactly as I played it

  2. You can try to repeat THE RHYTHM exactly as I played it, but with different notes

  3. You can play your own improvisation.

Any of these are great ways to practice! It's ear training, rhythmic training, form learning, and fun all at the same time.

One Measure Phrases (2 choruses over the song form)
Two Measure Phrases (2 choruses over the song form)

BONUS!

This wouldn't be a Tim Collins lesson without me going way overboard and not knowing when to stop. So here I give you some bonus lessons if you are still looking for a challenge!

Using Chromatic Approach Tones to JAZZ it up!
FINAL Improv demo - using everything!! (and then some ;)
